General Rules and Etiquette

1. Do not offer to host or exchange if you know you will not be able to fulfill the commitment. It is heartbreaking for a child when they don't receive their Flat back.

2. Please do not assume the host family will be able to send souvenirs or take on the responsibility of extra postage!

3. Be certain your name, address, and e-mail address are on the back of your Flat.

4. Stay in touch with your host/owner. People like to know what's going on. Don't leave anyone hanging or worried about the fate of their Flat.

5. Keep good records. If you are hosting or sending multiple Flats, be sure you keep records of the family names, addresses, and e-mail addresses. I also track when I send and/or received them.

6. The parent(s) or teacher is ultimately responsible for Flats in their possession. Please take this into consideration when agreeing to host. If your plate is already too full, it might be best to wait on a Flat project. I urge you to make a plan before you jump in with both feet.

7. Do not assume someone is ignoring you. Some people only check their e-mail once a week. Use patience and understanding when dealing with people.
